Stacey Lauretta Dash[1] (born January 20, 1966[2][3] or 1967[4][5]) is an American actress and former talk show host. Dash is known for her co–starring role as Dionne Marie Davenport in the 1995 feature film Clueless and its eponymous television series.[3] She has also appeared in films such as Moving, Mo’ Money, Renaissance Man and View from the Top. Other television work by Dash includes appearances in series such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Single Ladies and the reality TV show Celebrity Circus. She has also appeared in music videos for Carl Thomas‘ “Emotional” and Kanye West‘s “All Falls Down“.

Early life[edit]

Born in The Bronx borough of New York City,[1] Dash is of Bajan, African American and Mexican descent.[6] She is the daughter of a Mexican-American mother Linda Dash (née Lopez;[1][7] d. 2017)[8] and Dennis Dash, an African American.[7] Dash has a stepfather, Cecil Holmes, and a younger brother, Darien Dash,[1] who is the founder of DME Interactive, the first publicly traded African American-led Internet company.[9][1] Her first cousin is Damon Dash, the former CEO and co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records.[10] Dash attended Paramus High School, graduating in 1985.[11][12]

Career[edit]

Dash made her first television appearance in the NBC crime drama pilot Farrell: For the People starring Valerie Harper and Ed O’Neill in 1982, which did not make it past its pilot episode.[13] Her first notable appearance was as Michelle in the 1985 The Cosby Show episode “Denise’s Friend“.[4] Dash’s first substantial television role was in the 1988 series TV 101. The series was canceled after 13 episodes. Dash’s first major film role was in the Richard Pryor comedy Moving in 1988. She also had sizable roles in Mo’ Money and Renaissance Man during this time. In 1995, Dash starred as a femme fatale in the low-budget film Illegal in Blue. Dash received her big break with the 1995 teen comedy film Clueless. Dash played Cher’s high school best friend Dionne Davenport, although Dash was twenty-eight at the time. In 1996, the film spawned a television spin-off of the same name, in which Dash reprised her role as Dionne. The series ran from 1996 to 1999.

After the television series ended, she appeared in View from the Top (2003) and smaller budget films, including Gang of Roses (2003), and Getting Played (2005). She also has appeared in small guest roles on television shows such as Eve and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Dash played Vanessa Weir in the television series The Strip, which was not successful and was canceled after several episodes. In 2001, Dash was featured in a music video by Carl Thomas for the single “Emotional“. In 2004, Dash was featured in a music video by Kanye West, labelmate of her cousin Damon Dash, for the single “All Falls Down“. Dash posed nude in the August 2006 issue of Playboy. Also in 2006, she was featured in singer Marques Houston‘s video for “Favorite Girl“. In 2006, she launched her own lingerie line called Letters of Marque.[14] In 2007, she completed filming roles in I Could Never Be Your Woman, Nora’s Hair Salon II, Fashion Victim, Ghost Image and American Primitive. For 2008 release, she filmed Phantom Punch, Secrets of a Hollywood Nurse, and Close Quarters. Dash performed in the 2008 reality television series Celebrity Circus. Prior to the series premiere, Dash suffered a broken rib while training. Despite the injury, Dash performed on the trapeze bungee during the premiere and continued on to be a finalist. Dash finished second behind Antonio Sabàto, Jr.

Dash appeared as a recurring character on the television series The Game in early 2009. In 2011, Dash starred in the first season of VH1‘s first scripted series, Single Ladies, playing Valerie “Val” Stokes, described as a “‘good girl’ looking for a good man”.[15] On August 31, 2011, it was reported that she would leave the series in order to focus on her family.[16][17][18] In 2012, Dash starred as Lisa, the female lead in the film Dysfunctional Friends.[19] In 2012, Dash was featured in Funny or Die and YouTube broadcast trailers and shorts for her web series Stacey Dash Is Normal.[20] The scripted series launched in 2013.[21]

On May 28, 2014, Fox News announced that Dash had been hired as a contributor for “cultural analysis and commentary.”[22] On the December 7, 2015 edition of Outnumbered, Dash made a remark about President Barack Obama‘s address regarding Islamic terrorism that took place the day before, suggesting the president didn’t “give a shit” about terrorism. Due to this remark, the network suspended her without pay for two weeks.[23] In 2016, Dash received criticism when she argued that the BET Awards lied to black people about news regarding the boycotting of the Oscars due to lack of ethnic diversity, and called for an end to Black History Month.[24] She made a cameo at the 88th Academy Awards repeating this sentiment.[25] In addition, she criticized Jesse Williams‘s speech at the BET Awards.[26] On January 21, 2017, Fox News announced that Dash’s contract would not be renewed.[27][28]

Politics[edit]

Dash in 2013.

Dash voted for Barack Obama in the 2008 U.S. presidential election.[29] In 2012 she switched her party affiliation from Democratic to Republican[30] and endorsed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. In response to derogatory online comments she received for supporting Romney, Dash stated it was her opinion[31] and that she did not understand the vitriol.[29] Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan thanked Dash for supporting his ticket.[29]

Since the 2012 election, Dash has publicly expressed her political views. In April 2013, she criticized hip hop singers Jay-Z and Beyoncé‘s trip to Cuba.[32] In 2016, with regard to the debate over use of gender-specific bathrooms, she said that transgender rights “infringe upon [her own]”.[33] Dash writes a blog for Patheos.com.[34] Dash supported Republican candidate Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.[35]

On February 26, 2018, Dash filed to run in California’s 44th congressional district in the 2018 Congressional Election as a Republican.[36] On joining the race, Dash said she wanted to “free people from the shackles of a plantation mentality.”[37] Dash announced her withdrawal from the congressional race on March 30, 2018.[38]

Personal life[edit]

Dash has been married three times and has two children. She married producer Brian Lovell on July 16, 1999[2] and they divorced in the mid-2000s[3][39] The two have a daughter, Lola (born 2003).[39] From 2005 to 2006, Dash was married to British executive James Maby, CEO of Sports Logistics.[40] In 2007,[4] or 2009,[39] Dash married actor Emmanuel Xeureb. She filed for divorce in January 2010 and it was finalized in September 2011.[41][39] Dash has a son named Austin, born in 1991 from her relationship with singer Christopher Williams.[3][39]

Dash has spoken openly about past traumas in her personal life. She has at various times revealed that she was molested as a child by a family friend, was addicted to cocaine in her teens and 20s, and has a history of being with physically and emotionally abusive partners.[42] Dash has attributed her openness with such topics to her desire to be honest with her children, feeling that being honest is the best way to protect them, and to let them and others know that she is not a victim but a survivor.[42] She is supportive of the right to keep and bear arms, crediting a gun with saving her life after being sexually assaulted at gunpoint by an ex-boyfriend, because she was able to retrieve her own weapon, a .22 revolver, and shoot at him, scaring him away.[43]

Kristin Elizabeth Cutler[1] (née Cavallari; born January 5, 1987)[2] is an American television personality, fashion designer, and actress. Born in Denver, Colorado, she attended Laguna Beach High School as a teenager after spending junior high and freshman year living in Barrington, Illinois. In 2004, Cavallari came to prominence after being cast in the reality television series Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, which documented the lives of her and her friends.

After moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career in 2006, Cavallari appeared in several television series as minor characters.

Cavallari is married to American football player Jay Cutler.[3]

Early life[edit]

Cavallari was born in Denver, Colorado,[2] one of two children of Judith Eifrig and Dennis Cavallari.[4] She is of German and Italian descent.[5]

Media career[edit]

Cavallari in September 2008

Cavallari was in her junior year of high school when the first season of Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County began production. At the time, she was involved in an on-and-off relationship with senior Stephen Colletti. Cavallari’s romance with Colletti caused a rivalry with another cast member, Lauren Conrad. The love triangle became one of the series’ central plot lines.

In May 2009, Cavallari confirmed she would be joining the cast of Laguna Beach’s spin-off series, The Hills.[6] She made her first appearance on the series during the fifth season’s mid-season finale on May 31, 2009, at Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt‘s wedding, where she caught the bouquet. The second half of the season premiered on September 29, 2009, with Cavallari assuming the position of former main cast member and narrator Conrad. Despite originally signing a deal with MTV to appear in two additional seasons following the fifth, the sixth and final season concluded on July 13, 2010.[7]

Cavallari was on the 13th season of ABC‘s Dancing with the Stars and partnered with two-time champion, Mark Ballas. She was the third to be eliminated.[8][9]

After Laguna Beach, Cavallari headed to Los Angeles and signed on the UPN reality television series Get This Party Started, which premiered February 7, 2006. The series was canceled after airing two episodes. She appeared on one episode of another UPN series, Veronica Mars, and went on to guest roles on series including CSI: NY, Cane, and Adventures in Hollyhood. In 2006, she signed on as Crystal in the horror film Fingerprints.

In 2008, she had a supporting role as Summer in Spring Breakdown alongside Amy Poehler. The film was released straight-to-DVD on June 2, 2009, and received mixed reviews. She also starred in the independent film Green Flash alongside Torrey DeVitto. In 2009, she starred in the independent American high school comedy film, Wild Cherry, as Trish, which also starred Rumer Willis. She also starred in the straight-to-DVD film, National Lampoon’s Van Wilder: Freshman Year, as Kaitlyn. The film was released July 14, 2009, to mixed to negative reviews.[citation needed]

On April 4, 2018, E! announced that Cavallari would be getting her own reality show, Very Cavallari. Set to premiere in summer 2018, the docuseries will “follow Kristin as she opens the flagship store and Nashville headquarters of her rapidly growing fashion and lifestyle brand Uncommon James”.[10]

Charity work and public image[edit]

Cavallari has been involved in the “Until There’s a Cure” public service advertising campaign, to raise awareness and funds for AIDS and HIV research and vaccine development.[citation needed] In 2006, Cavallari appeared in ads for PETA,[11] and has also appeared as a celebrity spokesperson for “We Are Ellis Island”, a campaign for the restoration of Ellis Island.[citation needed] In February 2009, she posed for the NOH8 Campaign in support of gay marriage.[12]

In January 2010, she traveled to El Salvador to do charity work. In March 2011, Cavallari traveled to Kenya to do charity work with the non-profit organization One Kid One World.[citation needed]

In March 2014, Cavallari drew national criticism for refusing to vaccinate her children, a decision she and her husband, Jay Cutler, based on fears of a connection between childhood vaccination and autism.[13][14][15]

From 2015–2016, the former website Gawker ran a series of daily articles on Cavallari for a streak of 415 days.[16] The series, by Allie Jones, was called “500 Days of Kristin”—although it ended after just 415 days, with the publication of Cavallari’s book Balancing in Heels. By treating Cavallari’s quotidian Instagram posts as newsworthy, the series appeared to gently mock the culture of celebrity women on social media.

Personal life[edit]

Cavallari pregnant with her second child in April 2014

Cavallari began dating then Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler in late 2010,[17] and they became engaged in April 2011. They called off the engagement in July 2011,[18] but reconciled in November 2011.[19] Cavallari and Cutler wed on June 8, 2013, in Nashville, Tennessee.[20] They have three children: sons Camden (born August 8, 2012),[21] Jaxon (born May 7, 2014)[22] and daughter Saylor (born November 23, 2015).[23]

Her brother, Michael Cavallari, was found dead on December 10, 2015, having died of hypothermia following a car crash.[24][25]
