Florence Pugh (born 3 January 1996) is an English actress.

Early life[edit]

Pugh was born and raised in Oxfordshire.[1][2] She lived in Andalusia, Spain for part of her childhood. Her father, Clinton Pugh, is a restaurateur,[3] and her mother, Deborah, is a dancer. Pugh has three siblings, including actor and musician Toby Sebastian. Her first school was in Sotogrande in Spain. Her love of accents and comedy was first displayed aged 6 at Cokethorpe Juniors; cast as Mary she decided to play Mary with a broad Yorkshire accent. More lead parts followed at Wychwood School (2007–2009), and at St. Edward’s School, Oxford.[4][5][6]


Pugh’s debut performance was in the mystery drama The Falling (2014).[7] For her role as a precocious teenager in the film, she was nominated for Best British Newcomer at the 2014 BFI London Film Festival. She was also nominated for Best Young British/Irish performer at The London Film Critics’ Circle Awards.[8]

In 2015, she played her first lead role, in the TV pilot for Studio City, with Eric Mccormack.[9] Next, she played the lead in William Oldroyd’s feature film Lady Macbeth (2016), and starred in the ITV drama Marcella.[10] In October 2016, she was announced as a “Star of Tomorrow” by Screen International. In December 2016, she was selected by an international jury for the 2016 BAFTA Breakthrough Brit Award. Also in December 2016, she won The Evening Standard Breakthrough of The Year Award for Lady Macbeth. In February 2017, she won The Dublin Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress at The Dublin International Film Festival.[11]

In 2018, she appeared in the film The Commuter, starring Liam Neeson. In January 2017, it was announced that she will play the lead role in Fighting with My Family, a film written and directed by Stephen Merchant and based on the life of professional wrestler Paige.[12]
