After two years of not being able to sign international free agents for more than $300,000, the Yankees, according to, inked two of the top 16 prospects Sunday.
Everson Pereira, an outfielder from Venezuela considered the fourth-best prospect, got $1.5 million. Roberto Chirinos, a shortstop from Venezuela ranked 16th, received $900,000.
Ronny Rojas, a shortstop from the Dominican Republic ranked 11th, doesn’t turn 16 until next month, so he can’t sign until then. When he does, it will be with the Yankees, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
“[Pereira] has bat speed and may have to move to the corner, but he has pop,” a Latin America talent evaluator said.
